Hamilton Southeastern High School Wins State Constitutional Competition

Will Compete for National Title in 2019

INDIANAPOLIS – Hamilton Southeastern High School, Fishers, Ind., won the Indiana Bar Foundation’s premiere civic competition and will represent Indiana at the national competition. Three hundred teens versed in the U.S. Constitution and American history competed in the We the People State Finals December 9-10 in Indianapolis. The teams from these three high schools scored highest by the judging panels in three rounds of questions on constitutional issues and contemporary applications:

  1. Hamilton Southeastern High School, Fishers
  2. Fishers High School, Fishers
  3. Plainfield High School, Plainfield

Other teams competing in the top five were Castle High School, Newburgh, and Franklin Central High School, Indianapolis.

We the People students are an inspiration to all,” said Charles R. Dunlap, executive director of the Indiana Bar Foundation (Foundation).  “These students instill hope and confidence in our next generation of leaders.”

Hamilton Southeastern High School will compete in the national We the People competition April 26-29, 2019 in Virginia.

The We the People program teaches students about American history and constitutional issues, including current events and applicable court cases. Students testify in mock congressional hearings before panels of volunteer judges from the community. Teams advance from Indiana’s four regional competitions to one state competition with the eventual winner advancing to national finals.

The We the People educational model has been shown to increase civic participation, including voting rates, for students as they become adults. The model is one of the most effective for creating informed citizens who vote at higher rates than their peers.
