Indianapolis Couple Awarded Woods Award at Indiana High School Mock Trial Competition

INDIANAPOLIS – Doug and Lynette Long, Indianapolis, were selected for the Woods Award at the 2018 Indiana High School Mock Trial Competition. The award was presented to them by Hon. Steven David, Indiana Supreme Court, during the awards ceremony.

The Longs are the rare supporters who donate not only financial resources but their time and expertise.  According to the nominations received, they:

  • coached for 17 years, including during time their children participated;
  • serve as role models for more than 65 students at more than 500 formal practices and 2,000-plus hours committed to students. One volunteer estimated they have studied 17,000 lines of witness testimony in that time and reviewed 126 exhibits.
  • teach appreciation for the law;
  • donate to assist the Heritage program;
  • foster relationships between teammates; and
  • develop students’ skills for detailed research, confidence and public speaking.

Janice Houghton, a fellow mock trial coach at Heritage Christian School and faculty sponsor said this: “I have received 30 letters from mock trial alumni and am impressed by how many students with whom the Longs remain in contact years after they have graduated.  The Longs are invited to college graduation open houses and weddings and are informed when these alumni have babies, move or change jobs.  That demonstrates the strong and lasting relationships they have developed.”

The purpose of the Indiana Mock Trial program is to stimulate and encourage a deeper understanding and appreciation of the American legal system. The program provides the opportunity for students to learn the judicial system through a hands-on experience. Through mock trials, students gain an understanding of society's approach to dispute resolution and justice through an experiential learning opportunity.

Educating tomorrow’s leaders, like the students participating in high school mock trial program, is a primary example of how the legal community is working statewide to serve the public. Learn more about this charitable mission at www.inbf.org.
